A college student in Waco, Texas, witnessed this firsthand when she met a shelter dog who wouldn’t part with his treasured toy. The image stayed with her, and in that moment, she realized she couldn’t walk away from him.
A Dog And His Toy
Brooke Reese, a senior at Baylor University, decided to foster a two-year-old Pit Bull mix named Squishy after learning he was high on the euthanasia list.
The shelter staff believed he might have cancer, and fostering offered him a better chance at life.
When Brooke brought Squishy home, she made sure to include his favorite stuffed toy, Stitch. He had formed a strong bond with it, carrying it everywhere.
Brooke found it sweet but couldn’t help noticing that the toy was in bad shape. Stitch’s tail was hanging off, and several seams had come loose. She decided it was time to repair it.
She waited patiently for Squishy to set the toy down so she could perform what she called “surgery.”
When the moment came, she began mending Stitch with care and filmed the process for her TikTok followers on @brooke.reese.

In the clip, Squishy sits nearby, watching Brooke intently as she fixes every stitch of his precious toy.
Once the repairs were finished, he eagerly grabbed Stitch in his mouth and began playing again, clearly overjoyed. It was as if he understood she had just saved his best friend.
Squishy’s attachment to his toy made perfect sense once Brooke learned his story. He had been found on the streets by a kind woman, clutching that same toy even in his hardest moments.
For a dog who once had nothing, Stitch represented comfort, safety, and love.
