Tip About Dogs On Abandoned California Property Leads Rescuers To An Unexpected Discovery

By George Garcia 03/23/2026

Animal rescuers deserve every bit of appreciation they receive for the relentless work they do to give vulnerable animals another chance.

But the people who notice something is wrong and decide not to look away matter just as much. Far too often, animals suffer in silence while others pass by. The ones who choose to speak up can become the reason help arrives at all.

That is what happened in this story.

A concerned person noticed animals in distress and contacted Priscilla Wolcott. That single act of compassion became the starting point for a rescue that would save lives.

A Compassionate Tip Leads To A Life-Saving Rescue

After receiving information about dogs living on an abandoned property, Wolcott quickly took action.

As an animal control officer with Fresno Humane Animal Services in California, she was well-equipped to handle this situation calmly and efficiently.

Initially, Wolcott expected to find just one family of dogs on the property. To her surprise, there were two mother dogs, each with her own litter, all living underneath an old trailer.

What she found was heartwarming.

“What was so cute and sweet was that they were switching off nursing each other’s babies,” Wolcott shared with The Dodo.

The mothers were working together, a crucial reason why they had managed to survive.

Thanks to their cooperation, the puppies were healthy, energetic, and well-fed. They were thriving, much better than expected under such circumstances.

From Danger To Safety

Wolcott carefully gathered the dogs and transported them to the California shelter where they could receive proper care.

One mother was named Gorda, and her puppies were Iris, Lewis, Waylon, and Edward. The second mother, Ziggy, had Finn, Bennie, Alfred, Pandora, Breezy, Ringo, Nigel, and Turner.

“The moms were scared,” Wolcott recalled. “But once we put them into a kennel and brought their babies to them, they opened up a lot more.”

With time and patience, the staff helped ease their anxiety, and the puppies grew curious about their new environment.

They bounced from toy to toy, exploring every corner and slowly gaining confidence.

A Bright Future Ahead

Though it’s too soon to place them in permanent homes, the shelter team is committed to giving them the care they need.

The puppies will soon receive their vaccinations, which will make them eligible for adoption. With their loving personalities, it’s likely they’ll find their forever families soon.

As for the two mothers, their dedication to their pups has given these little ones the best start possible. With continued support, these dogs are on their way to brighter, safer futures.
